Tiffany: How did you meet your boyfriend?

Millicent: He and I met in the Black Singles group on Facebook called Real Black Love Movement.

Tiffany: I’m sure there were other guys reaching out to you. What made him special?

Millicent:  In November 2019, he respectfully introduced himself on Facebook messenger. He told me I was beautiful and explained that he wanted to take the time and get to know me.

Tiffany: How often do you see each other?

Millicent: We have never physically met.

Tiffany: Wow, you have never seen each other? When will you all meet?

Millicent: I am planning to travel to Ghana in Summer 2020. I can’t wait to see him in person so I can feel his energy, hold hands and give him lots of hugs. I’m positive he will take good care of me when I come to Accra.

Dating Abroad

Tiffany: Is this your first time dating someone abroad?
Millicent: Yes this is my first experience dating someone from another continent.

Tiffany: This relationship is fairly new. How is the communication in your relationship?

Millicent: Although he has a thick accent, I can understand him very well. Sometimes we have miscommunication when we use various phrases. For example, I made a comment and he responded by saying, “Whatever you say”. I had to clarify to see where that statement was coming from. When we have misunderstandings we try to see each others point of view.

Tiffany: What do you all do to keep the romance alive since you don’t reside in the same location?

Millicent: What’s App is our main method of communication. We often send love letters, write poems and exchange pictures.  Every morning, he sends me an encouraging Good Morning text. For my birthday in December, he sent me a love package with included chocolates, fabric, clothes, and jewelry.

Tiffany: Do you see the relationship progressing to marriage?
Millicent: For now, I am enjoying the dating phase. As I get older, I am dating more intentionally. My ultimate relationship goal is to be married.
Tiffany: What advice would you give someone who is dating a guy from ghana?
Millicent: My advice would be to not judge them based on what others have said about them, get to know them for yourself. Also, try to be more patient and understanding when it comes to the language barrier. It is definitely a challenge!

Tiffany: What have you noticed about Ghanaian men that may differ from an American man?
Millicent: What I noticed about men from Ghana is that they are more willing to provide for their families, they are firm believers in being family-oriented and they LOVE to cook! That is a major plus!

Does he want a Green Card?

Tiffany: I have to say it, “Most people think that foreign men only want a green card” What are your thoughts on this subject?
Millicent: In the beginning, I thought this relationship is too good to be true and maybe he had an ulterior motive. As the months have passed, I trust him and I know that he is not looking for any type of sponsorship.
When I hear people say African men only want a green card, I tell them not to put all foreign men in the same box because of a rumor or one bad experience that they had.

Tiffany: Would you ever relocate to Ghana?

Millicent: Yes I would relocate. I would prefer to spend 6 months here in Texas as I own my own home. I would like to spend the next 6 months in Accra as he is in the Logistics industry and has a business selling Fabric and textile.
